In evidence, Redfern said: "There was a lady lying in our bed, drinking and smoking. In response to being questioned by the couple, Mrs Barnes is said to have responded that she was in her room and was meant to be there. She said it was a "common occurrence" for him to be shouting at his partner Nicky Learoyd-Lewis, but that night she said he "sounded like a raving lunatic". Redfern is said to have mocked Mrs Barnes as she complained of chest pains and his comments was caught on a security camera.She fell unconscious shortly after and neighbours were forced to try and help resuscitate her.ĭuring his trial, Junior prosecutor James Coutts read a statement from neighbour Lynn Hynes, who said she heard the defendant shouting inside his home. A post-mortem said there was a traumatic injury to her liver and the suffered extensive internal bleeding. Her injuries were "catastrophic," the court heard, and Mr Jones compared them to being like a high-speed car crash. Jurors were told the man, who is six feet one inch tall and weighed 21 stone, had deliberately and forcefully kicked or stamped on Mrs Barnes on Marine Parade, Barmouth, in an “unjustified and gratuitous” attack. The trial had heard cruel Redfern was surprised that intoxicated Mrs Barnes mistook his home for her B&B but acted "out of all proportion" in hauling her outside by her feet. Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers found she had suffered blunt force trauma. The reason Mrs Barnes died is she had the misfortune of coming across a man who was an angry bully." Mr Jones said: "It was a mistake that ultimately cost her her life. She had travelled over 100 miles from Birmingham to the seaside Welsh resort for a £95-a-night stay.īefore attempting to find her bed and breakfast, Mrs Barnes had purchased a bottle of gin on while on a seaside stroll in the evening.She went into the wrong home e and went straight to bed, before pouring herself a nightcap. Mrs Barnes, who weighed seven and a half stone, had been visiting- friends in Barmouth last year.
